Culminating a nearly three-year search process, Christ Congregation in Princeton unanimously called the Rev. Dr. Kirk A. Johnson to be its new settled pastor as of August 1, 2023.
The Rev. Dr. Johnson (he/him/his) is Assistant Professor of Justice Studies and Medical Humanities at Montclair State University. He received his BA in Religious Studies from Seton Hall University, Masters of Divinity (MDiv) from Drew Theological School, and his Doctorate in Medical Humanities (DMH) from Drew University. He is a member of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities and The New York Academy of Medicine.
The Rev. Dr. Johnson has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored several books. His recent books are "The Anti-Racism Resource Guide Volume One: Supporting Black Businesses and Economics" (Peculiar Capital, 2020) and “Medical Stigmata: Race, Medicine, and the Pursuit of Theological Liberation” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018).
He is the co-host of the "Bioethics in the Margins" podcast series. He is an ordained clergy in the United Church of Christ (UCC) where he serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the UCC's Central Atlantic Conference, Secretary of the UCC Central Atlantic Conference’s New Jersey Association, a member of the Summit Interfaith Council Anti-Racism Committee, and creator of the “Race Talk: Origins” and “Race Talk: Systems” courses.
Commenting on his new ministry, the Rev. Dr. Johnson said “I am thrilled and excited to be Christ Congregation's settled pastor. We will be embarking on a sacred journey together. I am a college professor, author, podcaster, entrepreneur, bioethicist, and medical humanist. The most precious call for me is being a pastor. It is the result of my own twelve-year journey of introspection, patience, persistence, and gaining wisdom. I will bring these qualities and more to Christ Congregation. Pastoring is a privilege that I do not take lightly. With God’s grace, provision, and discernment, I am honored to start this ministry.”
The church’s Co-Moderator, Robert Moore, said “We are thrilled and blessed to have such a talented and broadly qualified candidate accept God’s call—affirmed by the entire congregation in a unanimous vote—to be our next settled Pastor. We are excited to have such an outstanding spiritual leader to lead us in meeting the challenges and opportunities ahead. We invite anyone interested to visit our boldly progressive, open and affirming, justice-seeking community of faith located in the heart of Princeton.”
