THE LORD’S SUPPER will be celebrated.

WE WELCOME Margaret Hannah Webb, our new seminarian for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Margaret is a M.Div student at Princeton Theological Seminary.

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND SECOND HOUR:

LITTLE ONES: There will be one class for infants and our younger children. We will share Bible stories with the children and also have snack, crafts, and  supervised play. We are asking that parents of children in the program volunteer to help out in the class on a rotating basis. There will be a sign up sheet available this Sunday. If you prefer to keep your child with you in church we are entirely supportive of that decision.  We just want all of our parents to be aware that child care and age appropriate Christian Education will be available.

OUR OLDER CHILDREN will also begin a new Sunday School program this  Sunday. We will be presenting this age group with a Bible lesson and guiding them in discussions about the lessons relevance and application in their everyday lives.  For more information, see Keeley Bruner, Elaine Bush, Helene Lis or Pastor Jeff.
Note: Our older youth are scheduled to remain in worship on the first Sunday of the month, Communion Sunday.

SECOND HOUR (adult education) continues with the discussion of a DVD series Embracing an Adult Faith with Marcus Borg. Second Hour does not meet on the first Sunday of the month, allowing our committees to meet after worship.

CONFIRMATION-MEMBERSHIP CLASS:
We’re planning a Confirmation-Membership class for our 12 years old and up. Interested? Please see or call Pastor Jeff.

THIS MONTH’S OUTREACH MINISTRY OFFERING will go to the ABC “World Mission Offering.” Learn more at: http://tinyurl.com/3ldkfal

Psalm 23 for Busy People

The Lord is my Pace Setter, I shall not rush,
He makes me stop and rest for quiet intervals,
He provides me with images of stillness,
Which restore my serenity.
He leads me in ways of efficiency,
through calmness of mind; and his guidance is peace.
Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day,
I will not fret, for his presence is here.
His timelessness, his all-importance will keep me in balance.
He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity,
by anointing my head with his oils of tranquility,
My cup of joyous energy overflows.
Surely harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruit of my hours,
For I shall walk in the pace of my Lord,
and dwell in his house for ever.

-Toki Miyashina

A poem shared after thinking how ordinary acts can sometimes be our most courageous.

XI.
by Wendell Berry

Though he was ill and in pain,
in disobedience to the instruction he
would have received if he had asked,
the old man got up from his bed,
dressed, and went to the barn.
The bare branches of winter had emerged
through the last leaf-colors of fall,
the loveliest of all, browns and yellows
delicate and nameless in the gray light
and the sifting rain. He put feed
in the troughs for eighteen ewe lambs,
sent the dog for them, and she
brought them. They came eager
to their feed, and he who felt
their hunger was by their feeding
eased. From no place in the time
of present places, within no boundary
nameable in human thought,
they had gathered once again,
the shepherd, his sheep, and his dog
with all the known and the unknown
round about to the heavens' limit.
Was this his stubbornness or bravado?
No. Only an ordinary act
of profoundest intimacy in a day
that might have been better. Still
the world persisted in its beauty,
he in his gratitude, and for this
he had most earnestly prayed.

SEMINARIAN, BRIAN WARFIELD, walked in last week’s CROP Walk. Donations can be contributed during the next six weeks. Brian wrote the following about his experience:

“After the service, I missed the church-wide meeting in order to attend the CROP walk with my family. While it was not very enjoyable physically (walking 5 miles without any practice rarely is), there was something to be gained spiritually and pastorally. I only wish that I had spent more of the time thinking about "spiritual" things rather than when the walk would end. Even so, it was an encouraging experience to see various Christian and Jewish congregations interacting with one another and participating in an activity that seeks to help the people the Hebrew Prophets and Christ were most concerned about. As I overheard some teenage girls discussing the overall value of the walk, I felt compelled to agree with the girl who said, "What's the point of walking? It's not like walking is going to end hunger." Right she was. But as I continued to think about why we were walking, I came to the conclusion that we were walking for three different types of people: ourselves, other individuals at the park, and the hungry. We walk for ourselves so that charity does not become a disinterested, impersonal activity where I can donate money online and never move my feet an inch in the direction of the poor and hungry. We need to be changed; we need to be engaged. So we walk. We also walk so those passing by will see that there is a brotherhood among all of God's children and that these timeless principles of caring for the needy are so great and so vital that we must join together in practicing them. Finally, and most importantly, we walk for the hungry so that their cause is taken up by people who will do more than write a check and go on about their lives. By walking, we give our friends and family some face to keep in their minds as they think about the reality of millions of people suffering from malnourishment.”

A DAILY REFLECTION:
In God's loving presence I unwind the past day,
starting from now and looking back, moment by moment.

IN SECOND HOUR THIS WEEK: Yosi Weldemedhir, a graduate student at the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University, recently returned from a year in Tunisia. In second hour, she will
start with a general introduction of the country, population, culture, religion, and a short history of its colonial past. Yosi writes: “I will be discussing my experiences in this country of contradictions - Tunisia's abundant beaches make it a haven for bikini-clad tourists although it is still a place of traditions and one where a woman's value is judged by her 'marriage-ability'. I will be discussing my life in the past year and also provide a glimpse into the lives of my Tunisian friends, a wonderful group of people I have come to love. I intend to touch upon their religious, social and political lives to provide a better idea of what life is really like for the citizens.”

LYNN HARPER WRITES that she “…has been called as the Interim Protestant Pastor for the Seabrook Village Retirement Community in Tinton Falls, where she currently serves as the Interfaith Chaplain.  Beginning in October, she will be leading Sunday worship at Seabrook.”

September 21st is the annual International Day of Prayer for Peace, sponsored by the World Council of Church’s and coinciding with the UN’s International Day of Peace. The International Day of Prayer for Peace offers an opportunity for church communities around the world to pray and act together to nurture a just peace in the hearts of people, their families, communities and societies. The idea was proposed in 2004 during a meeting between WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.  The focus for this year is Africa and theme is "Work and Pray in Hope for Peace.
Pray for Peace- Take a moment to pray for peace on September 21st or dedicate a worship service to peace in your community.
Work for Peace- Take action by contacting your Senator to ask him/her to ratify the New START Treaty to ensure U.S. security and take a step toward further nuclear disarmament.

FIFTH SUNDAY HYMN SING: As is now our custom at CC, we try to have an alternative worship format on fifth Sundays. On August 29, we're having a hymn sing --- so come prepared to sing some of your favorite oldies. Scroll down and you’ll find a list of songs and hymns. Think about your favorites. On Sunday, during worship, you’ll have an opportunity to request one (or more) of your favorites — and, we’d like you to tell us why the song has special meaning for you.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HODGES Family on the birth of Autumn, born August 25.

OUTREACH MINISTRY OFFERING: The OMO for July and August will go to the establishment of a Social Action discretionary fund. The past few years, natural disasters, sudden human-caused catastrophes, and a number of more localized emergencies have occurred and demanded our attention. The Social Action Committee would like to build a fund that allows Christ Congregation to respond to these occurrences. Of course, the BP oil spill is on our minds this year, and we will likely look into partnering with organizations we have worked with in the past to help address the needs as they continue to arise.

Of course, the BP oil spill is on our minds this year, and we will likely look into partnering with organizations we have worked with in the past to help address the needs as they continue to arise (for example, the Back Bay Mission project we supported some years back in the aftermath of Katrina).

Lynn Harper has an article in the The Huffington Post, "The Spiritual Implications of Dementia" http://tinyurl.com/23l6su8

From the Board of Deacons: "We have received multiple requests this month from individuals in need of assistance.  We would like to be able to offer help, but the needs currently outstrip our ability to fund them.  If you would like to contribute, please see Pastor Jeff or one of the deacons.  Thank you."

Jen and Julie just returned from their wedding in Mexico. Photos can be viewed here:  http://jenjulie.shutterfly.com/sharedphotos

CHILD SPONSOR: CC helps support a student who lives in Togo through a support organization called Plan-USA.
Here is a recent photo we received from our student, Magnoudewa, with her mother and brother.

On July 25, the Rev. Ted Hardgrove will be our worship leader.
On August 1, the Rev. Lynn Harper will be our worship leader.

UPCOMING BOOK CLUB DATES:
"The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery.
The book club will meet on Sept 18, 7:00 pm at Sally Handy-Zarnstorff's home.

"The Roman Empire and the New Testament" by Warren Carter.
We will meet on Oct 23, 7:00 pm at the Sundeen's.

A DAILY REFLECTION:
In God's loving presence I unwind the past day,
starting from now and looking back, moment by moment.
I gather in all the goodness and light, in gratitude.
I attend to the shadows and what they say to me, seeking healing, courage, forgiveness.

FROM JUDY: The camp where I work, and Julia attends, is looking for a bone marrow match for a four year old — her name is Charlotte. There are no matches for her within her family nor on the National Registry, probably because she is part Armenian. If you would like to become a bone marrow donor, the process involves only a consent form and a cheek swab test, and then volunteers are added to the national registry, not just for Charlotte.  The camp will also be holding a walk-a-thon to raise money since it costs about $90 per donor to process and maintain the National Bone Marrow Donor Program Registry.  If you are willing to be tested, please call 215-752-1987 to set up an appointment.  If you would like to contribute money, please email judy.hodges@yahoo.com.

Meet our new seminarian: This Sunday, Anthony Livolsi will begin his field education work with us at CC.
Anthony writes:
Warmest greetings to all of you at Christ Congregation!
My name is Anthony Livolsi and I have the good fortune to serve alongside you all in ministry as a seminarian-in-residence. I am — and this assumes my math is correct! — exactly halfway through the M.Div program at Princeton Seminary and loving every minute of it. Born in Jersey but bred in Phoenix, being back East feels like a homecoming of sorts; I'll take the romance of a snowstorm over dusty, desert monsoons any day! When I'm not reading for class, you can likely find me… reading for leisure. (Sickening, I know.) I also enjoy distance running, people-watching at Small World Coffee, and most baked goods.
I look forward to meeting you all personally in the days ahead!
Anthony
